In Mallorca, there are two species of native snakes: the hooded snake (M. mauritanicus) and the water snake (N. maura). Recently and accidentally, other snakes have appeared in the Balearic Islands that are common in the Iberian Peninsula and have arrived to the islands by means of the transport of goods. In general, the adults are specimens of more than one metre in length (depending on the species) that live near houses where they look for rats and mice (their main diet). Although they usually flee when we are present, if they are cornered they can bite (they are not dangerous species for humans or domestic animals). These snakes are protected in the Iberian Peninsula but in the Balearic Islands the protection is not applied since they are considered introduced or invasive depending on the species and the island where they are found.
