Since the Vespa velutina was declared eradicated on the island of Mallorca at the end of 2020, the presence of the species had not been detected on the island again, until last April the first warning was received and in May of this 2024 a primary nest of the Asian wasp was removed in the municipality of Palma.
After these first indications, the detection of specimens and the discovery of new nests has been continuous throughout the season. The 2024 campaign has ended with a total of 21 nests removed with a very wide distribution, including the municipalities of Palma, Calvià, Puigpunyent, Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Esporles, Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, Inca and Mancor del Valle.
We can say that Vespa velutina has returned with force, so, looking ahead to the next 2025 campaign, efforts to eradicate it from Mallorca again will have to be intense. Citizen collaboration is requested for the early detection of specimens and thus facilitate the control work of this invasive species. Collaborate with COFIB through the “línea verde” application.
