In 2013 the Royal Decree 630/2013 of 2 August was approved, which regulates the Spanish National Catalogue of Invasive Alien Species. The introduction of exotic species to the Balearic Islands is one of the main causes of the disappearance of native species, with the consequent loss of biodiversity and the alteration of ecosystems.
The COFIB’s Department of Health and Fauna Control works across the whole of the Balearics to control introduced and invasive species that seriously harm the species of the islands. It also monitors the health of specific wild species or species introduced into the environment to determine the pathologies that affect them and their possible interaction with domestic fauna (with special attention to possible zoonoses).
COFIB comprises several departments, each with a specific function.
