Promoting the Conservation of the Pitiusan Wall Lizard
From January to March, a total of eight environmental education workshops were held on the island of Ibiza, aimed at primary, secondary, and vocational training students. These workshops, whose main objective was to promote biodiversity and protect the Pitiusan wall lizard (Podarcis pityusensis), included the creation of urban reserves within schools.
Through this initiative, students participated in various practical activities. Native flora species were planted and artificial shelters, nest boxes, and insect hotels were installed, promoting a sustainable and safe habitat for the species. In addition, an informative talk was given and educational materials were distributed, including a manual of good gardening practices for the conservation of the Pitiusan wall lizard and two videos on the creation of urban reserves and the problem of invasive snakes that are beginning to colonize the islets near Ibiza and Formentera.
This program is part of the EU-PRTR project “Fighting Invasive Species in the Balearic Islands 2022-2026” and has been very well received by participants. Due to the interest generated, some late applications have been postponed until next spring.
